Why should I recycle solar panels?
Repurposing solar panels through recycling offers several environmental advantages. Firstly, it establishes a practical and sustainable approach for managing panels at the end of their useful PV lifespan. Additionally, recycling solar panels yields raw materials that can be utilized for repurposing and reprocessing purposes.
Is solar panel recycling dangerous?
Photovoltaic panels and modules frequently contain trace amounts of environmentally hazardous metals and elements such as lead, selenium, and cadmium. Improper disposal of these materials can pose significant environmental risks. However, recycling offers a solution by recovering up to 90% of the photovoltaic glass and as much as 95% of the semiconductor material needed for future production.
Why do so many solar panels end up in landfill?
Until recently, the demand for solar panel recycling facilities was minimal. However, the emergence of the first wave of obsolete solar panels has raised concerns. By 2016, approximately 4 million tonnes of PV had been installed worldwide, all with an anticipated lifespan of 25 to 30 years. Consequently, there is a growing need for expanded infrastructure to manage the significant volume of solar panels reaching the end of their lifespan by the 2030s. How much solar PV waste will there be in the future?
According to an IRENA report, by 2030 PV panel waste will reach four to 14 per cent of total generation capacity by 2030 and increase to over 80 per cent (78 million tonnes) by 2050. Though the sheer size of waste sounds worrisome, its financial value could help fund new solar panels.
The raw materials recovered in 2030 will be worth an outstanding £330 million. This could be used to produce up to 60 million new solar PV panels. By 2050, global PV waste is projected to reach 5 million tonnes annually. The materials recovered are estimated to total £11 billion – this could fund as many as 3 billion new panels.
